A question regarding the War on Terror

I do not frequently comment on international affairs, as domestic ones provide me with plenty of material, but this issue caught my eye when Bill posted on it this morning, and I simply could not resist.

We hear a great deal from voices both foreign and domestic who say that the US is to blame for creating its own enemies in the Middle East. We hear that our belligerent, imperialistic attitude toward other countries incites and encourages violence and terrorism: that if we'd just be nice to Al-Qaida and other terrorist networks they'd leave us alone.

But, if that were the case, why would a harmless little 72-year-old pacifist like the Dalai Lama suddenly need to start protecting himself against Al-Qaida assassination attempts?
